On grief.

Last Friday, my community suffered a terrible loss when two young people were instantly killed in a gruesome car crash. Nearly everyone I know is talking about it, many of my friends are close to the families affected.
Many more are not, but still seem to thrill at discussing all the unthinkable details of the deaths. I have noticed this phenomenon often when people talk about others tragedies. Cancer, accidents, murder. There are people who want all the trappings of tragedy without any of the pain. It's as if we like to talk about it just to assure ourselves it won't happen to us.
Is it a "There but for the grace of God go I" sentiment or something crueler? I want to be empathetic and sensitive to the victims families, and not overstep my bounds as an outsider; knowing that at truly any moment, a grief that deep could become my own.
My heart aches for those who lost someone dear to them.
